Subaru began building cars in Japan in 1954 after its parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, no longer needed to supply Japan with large numbers of military aircraft as it did during World War II. Subaru vehicles were only available in Japan until 1968, when Malcolm Bricklin and Harvey Lamm established Subaru of America in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Due to the growth of Subaru, they soon moved to their current home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In 1989, Subaru partnered with Isuzu, opened a joint factory in Lafayette, Indiana, and began producing the Subaru Legacy. In 2001, Isuzu sold their share of the plant to Subaru and it became known as Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. and earned the distinction of being the first assembly plant to be a recognized wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. facility has received many accolades and recently reached another milestone in automobile production.
The car that hit a milestone for Subaru
Just a few short weeks ago, the four millionth Subaru rolled off the assembly line at Subaru of Indiana facility. The indigo blue 2014 Outback joined the first Subaru that rolled off the same assembly line in 1989, a first-generation 1990 Subaru Legacy for a photo shoot outside the facility. Looking at the two side by side it is hard to fathom that there have been 3,999,998 other Subaru vehicles produced between them. The Outback, Legacy and Tribeca are all built at the Indiana assembly plant. As part of Subaru’s plan to bring the production of more models to the United States, they invested over $400 million into the Indiana facility in order to start producing the Impreza there very soon. As more models are added and production increases, it is estimated that by the end of 2017, the Subaru Indiana facility will have put another million units on the road. With the addition of the Impreza, Subaru expects to bring approximately 900 new jobs to the Lafayette, Indiana area helping to better the local economy.
