Is Your Vehicle Ready for Cooler Weather?

plano in fallAs the kids head back to school and the days grow shorter it is important to make sure your vehicle is just as ready for the cooler weather as you are. Your vehicle is an essential part of everyday life and should be treated as such. With fall here and winter approaching, here are a few tips to keep your car running its best and make sure you get to where you need to safely. Tony Molla of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence sums it up when he says, “Regular, routine maintenance can help improve your gas mileage, reduce pollution, and catch minor problems before they become big headaches,” and here are some tips to keep your vehicle running its best.

Regular Maintenance

vehicle maintenance at home

Now that the blistering heat of summer is gone, it is time to get your car caught up on its regular maintenance. Always read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. This takes all the guessing out of what needs to be done and when, and keeps you from forgetting important maintenance. Some of the items you can take care of right at home are:

  • Check all your vehicle’s fluids

In order to keep your car’s engine from overheating, make sure that you are using an engine coolant that has the proper mixture of 50/50 antifreeze and water. Failure of your coolant system due to hot or frozen antifreeze can end up causing major engine failure. Check your car’s oil. The correct level of clean oil reduces the internal temperature of your engine, and make sure you use  the oil weight recommended by the manufacturer. Now that you have checked essential engine needs, you will want to check your brake, transmission and windshield washer fluid. While a small amount of brake and transmission fluid will evaporate over time, if you have lost a significant amount or it looks dirty, you need to schedule an appointment for service. Always keep your windshield washer reservoir full and always use washer fluid, not water. Do not forget to check your windshield wipers and change them periodically as well.

  • Make a Service Appointment

If all your fluids check out okay, leave the more involved maintenance items to the professionals. Your technician will check your brakes, rotors, brake lines, tires and other important mechanical components of your car, truck or SUV. While you can check these items yourself, if they do need attention, most people opt to let someone else take care of them anyway, so you can save some time by just making an appointment at your local service center. Most service centers have specials when the seasons are changing to check all the important components of your vehicle, change your oil, suggest any needed repairs and let you save some money in the process. Taking care of minor repairs before they become major problems can help prolong the life of your vehicle and help you keep more money in your pocket.

Prepare for the Worst

When it comes to travel, you must be just as prepared for your trip to work as you are for the annual family road trip. Always “prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.” With this being said you will want to make sure to stock your car with an emergency kit. When temperatures drop and the season for stormy weather arrives, you need to be prepared for any type of travel emergency. Some important items that you can keep in your vehicle are:

  • A blanket
  • Jumper cables
  • A flashlight with fresh batteries
  • A small knife
  • Flares
  • A couple of energy bars
  • Gloves
  • Small shovel
  • Waterproof matches
  • Bottled water
  • First aid kit
  • A battery powered weather radio
  • Extra coolant and windshield washer fluid
