Subaru is facing some challenges, however, most automakers can only wish they had the same problem. The issue is that Subaru is selling so many cars that they must expand in order to meet consumer demand. Clearly, this is an excellent problem to have.
How Many Cars is Subaru Selling in 2013?
Subaru’s U.S. sales are up 27% in the first seven months of 2013, over three times the average market sales, as a whole. The brand is on track to sell 410,000 to 420,000 models in 2013. These numbers are astonishing when compared with 2012 sales that amounted to 336,441 vehicles in the U.S. during 2013 will mark the sixth straight year of sales gains for Subaru.
What’s Fueling the Growth?
From niche player to the big leagues, 2015 looks like the year for Subaru to hit half a million in sales. The automaker started with a small group of compact SUVs and Outback wagons, but their owners loved these vehicles, and the group of brand loyal drivers has continued to grow. The redesigned Forester, new XC Crosstrek, and BRZ have fueled growth for 2013. In 2014, Subaru plans to increase their media spending by over 50% to continue steady growth. Last year, Subaru spent roughly $190.5 million on media, but that number is expected to be at $300 million in 2014. The increased media buys will be paired with a revamp to the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon for a rock solid year in sales.
Consumers are Knocking, Will Subaru Answer?
“Our only wall is the wall of production capacity,” said Dean Evans, CMO of Subaru of America. Subaru was taken by surprise with its own success in the U.S. market. Shortages of the automaker’s newest models are sprouting up across the country. 2013 models have only seen a 15-day supply, while the industry averages hovers around 60 days. Subaru is increasing Japanese production capacity by 15% and investing $400 million to increase its U.S. factory production. The Lafayette, Ind. plant will see a 76% increase in production to 300,000 vehicles by 2016.
