Subaru announces they have been awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

It was announced on Christmas day by Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), Subaru’s Manufacturer in Tokyo, that the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the highest standard of safety, the 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus award to the Forester, Legacy and Outback models for their advancement in “EyeSight” technology and superior rating for front crash prevention. Even without the new technology, additional Subaru models, the Impreza and XV Crosstrek, were also awarded the 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick. While the advances in technology add an extra edge to the safety of Subaru vehicles earning them the Pick Plus rating, Subaru’s commitment to quality and safety can be seen in all their vehicles.

New standards for receiving the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

As of September 2013, the IIHS has revised the testing standards to make earning the Top Safety Pick Plus award even tougher. To earn the top spot, vehicles now are required to receive a score of good performance in the Institutes moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint test, plus a minimum of a basic rating for front crash prevention. “We’ve made it more difficult for manufacturers this year,” says IIHS President Adrian Lund. “Following a gradual phase-in, the small overlap crash is now part of our basic battery of tests, and good or acceptable performance should be part of every vehicle’s safety credentials. We also felt it was time to offer extra recognition to manufacturers that are offering a proven crash avoidance technology.” Out of all the tests that the IIHS threw at the Subaru lineup, they came out on top with a perfect score, 6 out of 6 points for front crash prevention in both the 12mph and 25mph test.

Subaru’s innovations help earn high marks

2014 Legacy

The new “EyeSight” technology is what really took Subaru to the next level. Since its debut on the Japanese market in 2008, this new system has used stereo camera technology to detect the presence of cyclists and pedestrians. If the system detects a possible impact, it stops the vehicle by applying the pre-collision braking control, thereby either reducing the damage from a collision, or avoiding a collision altogether. Thanks to FHI for their aim to provide superior performing vehicles, we can all take comfort through the “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind,” and “Confidence in Motion” slogans.
